Keeping the London 2012 Olympics and Team GB germ free

The BOA is concerned about illness affecting Team GB’s hopes of success at the London Olympics and has therefore issued a request that they avoid handshakes.

Transmission of contagious germs can be from touching another person, such as a in a handshake. Although the skin is home to many organisms, mostly bacteria, the majority are benign. Staphylococci and streptococci are two common bacteria found on the skin that can cause infection.*

We all know that germs can spread from contact with the hands. You shake someone's hand and the germs are transferred. You then wipe your eyes and the germs are spread. However, handshakes are not the only way germs are spread. You can touch a doorknob, use a phone or touch anything another person has come into contact with. So, short of wearing gloves at all times, an athlete is going to come in contact with germs.
